What you need
- Clean suitable glass
- Stencil vinyl and transfer tape
- Glass etching cream approved for the project
- Gloves, eye protection, applicator and running water
Step-by-step
1
Prepare the stencil
Create a simple non-mirrored design, cut it and weed the areas that should be etched.
2
Clean the glass
Remove grease and fingerprints, dry fully and avoid touching the working area.
3
Apply the stencil
Transfer the vinyl to the glass and burnish every edge firmly to prevent seepage.
4
Protect surrounding areas
Cover all exposed glass that must not contact the etching product.
5
Apply as directed
Wear protection and follow the product label for application thickness and timing.
6
Rinse and reveal
Rinse exactly as directed, remove the stencil safely and wash the finished glass thoroughly.
Common problems
| Problem | Likely cause | Try this |
|---|---|---|
| Cream leaks under stencil | Edges were not sealed | Burnish every edge before application |
| Etch is uneven | Coverage was inconsistent | Apply the labelled amount evenly |
| Small detail disappears | Stencil detail is too fine | Use larger, simpler shapes |
