What you need
- Adhesive vinyl suitable for the intended surface
- Vinyl cutter and non-mirrored artwork
- Weeding tool and application tape
- Squeegee and surface cleaner
Step-by-step
1
Prepare the artwork
Use clean vector shapes, size the design and leave enough space between fine details.
2
Run a test cut
Set the blade to cut the vinyl layer without cutting through the backing paper.
3
Cut and weed
Remove the unwanted vinyl while leaving the finished design on its backing.
4
Apply transfer tape
Lay the tape over the design and burnish firmly from the centre outward.
5
Prepare the surface
Clean, dry and remove grease or dust from the destination surface.
6
Position and apply
Align the design, squeegee it down and peel the transfer tape back slowly at a low angle.
Common problems
| Problem | Likely cause | Try this |
|---|---|---|
| Vinyl stays on backing | Transfer tape has not gripped | Burnish again firmly |
| Bubbles appear | Vinyl was laid too quickly | Apply gradually from one edge |
| Edges lift | Surface is dirty or unsuitable | Clean and test the surface first |
